Who Are You Today? Bo McCoy on Identity, Purpose & Reinventing Your Life at Any Age

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't a lack of motivation - it's an outdated identity?

After retiring and finding himself stuck physically, emotionally, and spiritually, Bo McCoy experienced a life-changing moment that led him to ask one simple question:

"Who are you today?"

That question sparked a complete transformation.

In this conversation, Bo shares how he went from feeling trapped by his past to creating an identity-first framework that's helping people break free from old stories, discover their purpose, and create meaningful change through small, consistent actions.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why motivation isn't the real problem
  • How your identity shapes every decision you make
  • The surprising reason lasting transformation begins with one question
  • How tiny daily actions create extraordinary momentum
  • Why aligning your actions with your core values changes everything
  • Bo's remarkable journey from weighing 656 pounds to rebuilding his life from the inside out

Whether you're navigating a major life transition, searching for greater purpose, or simply feeling stuck, this conversation offers a practical and inspiring roadmap for becoming the person you're meant to be.

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: and founder of Begin Purpose and Begin Purpose Press. After reinventing his own life following retirement, he developed a practical framework that helps people move from feeling stuck to taking purposeful action through identity-based change.

6

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Bo is the author of multiple books, including The Handprint of Identity, and his work centers on one simple philosophy, identity, action, purpose, repeat. Welcome to the show, Bo. It's great to have you with us.

7

::

Bo McCoy: Hey guys, it's Bo, I gotta open with my signature. I have to have my, Forrest Gump wave there, that's my signature move.

8

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I love it. Alright, let me ask you the big question. Are you ready?

9

::

Bo McCoy: I'm ready.

10

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: What's the most significant thing, in your opinion, as individuals, we can do to make an impact on how the world is going?

11

::

Bo McCoy: This is a good question, because it is the one… it's the one question that if everybody did it today, the world would be different tomorrow. So that's how significant this is.

12

::

Bo McCoy: Here's what it is. Stop what you're doing.

13

::

Bo McCoy: Pay attention to yourself for a moment.

14

::

Bo McCoy: Just note with no other sounds, no music, no… just pay attention to you, yourself, and you.

15

::

Bo McCoy: and ask yourself this question. It's very simple, it's very poignant.

16

::

Bo McCoy: Who are you today?

17

::

Bo McCoy: And when you ask that question.

18

::

Bo McCoy: Of yourself, and you answer honestly and completely with a true core values

19

::

Bo McCoy: I guess you could say it's coming from core values.

20

::

Bo McCoy: When you answer that question honestly.

21

::

Bo McCoy: It will open up an avenue of self-discovery that you've never seen before.

22

::

Bo McCoy: The reason it's there, and it's like a door, and once the door swings open, it's like the floodgates of who you are are standing behind this door. And I will take this one step further and say, this purpose and identity has been hidden since the date of your birth.

23

::

Bo McCoy: The reason it's hidden? It's because all of the junk we stack on top of our identity and our life, all of the things we put through our eyes, all the things we put through our ears, all of that has been compounding on top of us for

24

::

Bo McCoy: 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years, all of it's setting on top of our identity and our purpose. It's hidden behind a door.

25

::

Bo McCoy: But when you ask that question honestly, and earnestly, and you go deep.

26

::

Bo McCoy: When you come up with the answer, that answer changes everything.

27

::

Bo McCoy: And that is a promise.

28

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yes.

29

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And it's interesting how much… We can pile on, but if we can just…

30

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Let… let the junk roll off.

31

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: and let… Everybody else's opinion of who we're supposed to be, slide away.

32

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: We can embrace what we're here to do, and everybody has a purpose.

33

::

Bo McCoy: We were created for a reason. I don't want to go hyper-spiritual, because I don't want to offend, because some people are super offended by certain things, but let me just say this. Me, personally, talk about myself. I was created with a purpose.

34

::

Bo McCoy: Therefore, my created purpose is somewhere down inside there. So the… I'm gonna make a huge statement, and I will back it up for myself.

35

::

Bo McCoy: the closer I get to my true identity, which I'm tapping at it very hard every single day, the closer I get to my creation and purpose identity.

36

::

Bo McCoy: And man, that's where the power lives. If you thought you were living awesome before.

37

::

Bo McCoy: When you dig deep, and you go down deep, and you get… you start chiseling away on all those years of crap that's on top of your identity, and it's like it goes inside your whole body. Your whole body resonates with who you are. When you tap that.

38

::

Bo McCoy: It becomes the motivation that you always thought you needed, that you always prayed for, all of the answers and questions that you thought were so far away are living right here. You just gotta tap them.

39

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Yep.

40

::

Bo McCoy: Does that make sense?

41

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It makes total sense to me. I'm… I'm with you, and it's so easy to stay stuck and miserable, because

42

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Looking at what you perceive the outside world thinks that you should be, rather than letting who you are just show up.

43

::

Bo McCoy: Feel it. I feel it.

44

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: So, I know you have… A… an amazing story.

45

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And I'd like for you to share with the audience your journey. You know, where were you when you got that epiphany that you didn't want to be in…

46

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: The bottom of all of this crap that was piled on top of you.

47

::

Bo McCoy: In order to answer that truthfully, and be deep with it, I gotta go back 5, almost 6 decades. I was born on March the 15th, 1969, and I weighed 3 pounds and 11 ounces. I was born 2 months premature, and my body was frail and

48

::

Bo McCoy: hanging on by a thread. So, I'm gonna skip forward real fast, but I had… I need you to understand what happened in the beginning affects where I am now, and it affects where I'm going. So, you have to understand that right from the beginning.

49

::

Bo McCoy: My body was an issue.

50

::

Bo McCoy: My… right from the beginning, my body claimed that it was going to control my life, it was going to be in control, and so it started out premature, unmalformed. I had seizures as a child. I… I had all… they gave me all these heavy drugs to kick me off the seizures.

51

::

Bo McCoy: And once I stopped taking the… I stopped having seizures, stopped having these heavy drugs, my body shifted. And when my body shifted, I started gaining weight.

52

::

Bo McCoy: at an exponential rate. So I was overweight from the time I was about 2, possibly a little younger.

53

::

Bo McCoy: By the time I was 5, I was husky and considered, you know, mildly obese. By the time I was 12, I was obese, and by the time I graduated from high school, I was almost 300 pounds. So you gotta understand, a life that began this small, fragile little person who everybody fawned over because he's so tiny, he's so fragile.

54

::

Bo McCoy: Became this humongous person that at one point, weighed 656 pounds.

55

::

Bo McCoy: So I went from being 3 pounds to 656 pounds, and then that leads me to the day you're talking about.

56

::

Bo McCoy: There were some other major events before that, of course, but let's talk about what happened most recently. A couple of years ago, I was sitting on the side of the bed.

57

::

Bo McCoy: I got… I had just gotten up, I threw my feet over, they hit the ground, my knees were killing me, my back sort of hurt, I hadn't slept well. It was just one of… to me, it was just another… another day, in the life of being obese and struggling.

58

::

Bo McCoy: And I just accepted that, that this was the day. So, as my feet hit the ground, I heard the voice say to me.

59

::

Bo McCoy: Who are you today

60

::

Bo McCoy: And I just shrugged it off. I was like, well, that's just dumb. Where did that voice come from? I'm a, you know, I'm a former business owner, I was an entrepreneur, I taught in colleges, I did all… I started going down my resume, like everybody does. If I ask any… if you stop anybody on the street and you say, who are you today? They're gonna say, oh, I'm a doctor, I'm this, I'm a that, oh, I'm a mother, I've got kids, you know, they'll go down their roles.

61

::

Bo McCoy: in there, they won't tell you who they are. They'll tell you all the things about their life, but they won't tell you who they are.

62

::

Bo McCoy: So here I am, sitting on the side of the bed, and my… my psyche, my heart, my spirit is asking me.

63

::

Bo McCoy: Who are you today?

64

::

Bo McCoy: I sit there with that, and I gave it an answer real fast, and my mind rejected it. My mind said, no, those are your roles, that's your jobs, you don't have those in you, you don't have that job anymore.

65

::

Bo McCoy: And man, that really perplexed me. I was upset with this thing. I walked around the whole day with it.

66

::

Bo McCoy: not having an answer, and it was a scary thing, because it kept… it kept coming into the back of my ear. Who are you today? It just… who are you today? It just kind of, like, tapping me, just… it just followed me around, and eventually I woke up.

67

::

Bo McCoy: mentally, as it were, I said, well…

68

::

Bo McCoy: I remember I did exactly what I'm about to show you. I did this.

69

::

Bo McCoy: Well, I guess I'm new today, because I don't know who I am.

70

::

Bo McCoy: That moment.

71

::

Bo McCoy: took away… 50 years.

72

::

Bo McCoy: of hard, encrusted life, and all of the bad things that anybody had ever said to me, calling me fat, calling me obese, calling me stupid, telling me I wasn't smart enough, telling me this, telling me all of that, and it just felt like it just went BOOM, and fell off.

73

::

Bo McCoy: And when it fell off, it's like my eyes went BING!

74

::

Bo McCoy: And when my eyes opened up for the first time with a true identity of who I could be, I call it the audacity of starting over.

75

::

Bo McCoy: And it's the audacity that I can start over at 55 years old? Are you kidding me?

76

::

Bo McCoy: So, I can say who I am, I have the authority to do that and to walk in it?

77

::

Bo McCoy: And that moment happened so fast for me.

78

::

Bo McCoy: that it almost… I hate to use this phrase, but it almost felt…

79

::

Bo McCoy: cheap in a way, because I didn't have to pay for it. I didn't have to work for it. It just happened. And because it just happened, and because this door went, oof.

80

::

Bo McCoy: It's like my spirit, and my heart, and my love, and everything I am just started spilling out of me.

81

::

Bo McCoy: And the more it spilled out, the more revelations I'm grabbing. Whoa, don't forget that! Grab that! That's good stuff! Let's start writing! And that's exactly what happened. I started, like, taking notes.

82

::

Bo McCoy: over the class that was happening in my mind, and the insight of what identity is. And I'm gonna say something, and because you're the Coach's Alchemist, you might be able to be able to appreciate this.

83

::

Bo McCoy: What happened to me that day was extraordinarily special.

84

::

Bo McCoy: It was off the charts amazing, and it opened up what I would consider an encyclopedia Britannica. Those are… you gotta be old enough to know what those are. So…

85

::

Bo McCoy: It opened up like an encyclopedia of what identity is, and what purpose is. And I started seeing identity and purpose as something more than just great ideas and coaching programs or whatever. At the time, I wasn't even a coach!

86

::

Bo McCoy: You gotta understand, I was just a guy sitting on his couch, or on the side of his bed. I didn't have a plan.

87

::

Bo McCoy: But I had now this repository.

88

::

Bo McCoy: of information, and I've tapped into something just ever so briefly, and it just deposited into me. And now, I've spent the last 2 years just letting it come out. And every time I think it's done, and I've reached the end of it, and that's the… the reservoir's empty now.

89

::

Bo McCoy: It's like it fills back up, and something else shows me. The book that you mentioned earlier, I love telling this story. Is it okay to keep going? Yeah.

90

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Dmit.

91

::

Bo McCoy: The book that I referred to, The Handprint of Identity, came to me in a dream. I went to bed one night, and I was thinking about all of this.

92

::

Bo McCoy: And I kept seeing a hand in front of my face all night long. Every time I would wake up, I'd see this hand in front of my face. I'd wake up and I'd see this hand in front of my face. Not a literal hand, but a spiritual hand, if you will, or a mind's eye hand.

93

::

Bo McCoy: And I kept hearing a phrase.

94

::

Bo McCoy: the handprint of identity, the handprint of identity, the handprint of identity, over and over. And I wrestled with this all night long. You know, the Bible talks about God. Jesus wrestled with God all night long. Well, guess what? Oh, he wrestled. Yeah, Jacob, sorry, thank you, thank you, thank you.

95

::

Bo McCoy: Jacob wrestled with, all night long, so I think that's what I was doing. I was wrestling with this identity piece all night long, and it was trying to impart something else to me that I hadn't seen yet, and I saw that hand. And when I saw that hand, it changed everything, because the next morning when I woke up, I walked into the living room, I sat down.

96

::

Bo McCoy: My wife was sitting on the couch, she was scrolling, doing some whatever, I don't even know, and I said to her, I said, did you sleep well? And she said, yeah. And I said, I did, and I had a meeting all night long. And she said, what? And I told her, I said, I've been in conference all evening.

97

::

Bo McCoy: And she just laughed, because she knew I was making… I was making a joke, but what she didn't realize is how deep that was real.

98

::

Bo McCoy: And I started typing. Just… just typing as fast as I could, get as much of it out as I could. And my wife was looking at me like, what are you typing over there? I go, remember I told you I just attended a meeting, I've got pages and pages of documents I've got to write today, and I spent the entire weekend writing.

99

::

Bo McCoy: So… Bringing it full circle.

100

::

Bo McCoy: What does that mean for the average person who's listening or watching?

101

::

Bo McCoy: How do they get to that point?

102

::

Bo McCoy: Remember when I started… we started this whole thing, I was just how… slow down and take one true look at yourself, and ask the one true question, who are you today?

103

::

Bo McCoy: If you want to have…

104

::

Bo McCoy: An understanding of who you are, and you want to change the world and make a dent in the universe, you first got to start by being yourself.

105

::

Bo McCoy: And…

106

::

Bo McCoy: I'd like to introduce myself to you. This is the first version this past 2 years, this is the first version of Bo in real time.

107

::

Bo McCoy: Everything else has been… Bo trying to survive.

108

::

Bo McCoy: This is Bo in real time.

109

::

Bo McCoy: And so, what you're seeing and what you're hearing from me is honesty, at a level that I cannot describe.

110

::

Bo McCoy: Other than it's pure.

111

::

Bo McCoy: And it's coming from inside me, so when I coach, or when I write, or when I post, or when I talk to you.

112

::

Bo McCoy: I'm coming from a place that's…

113

::

Bo McCoy: So pure and so heartfelt, honest for me, that…

114

::

Bo McCoy: it almost feels like I'm… I've got… I'm running around with this little light, and, you know, in a dark world, trying to show the light, trying to show… tell everybody, this is available to you, this is available to you, this is available to you, and that's kind of where I'm at.

115

::

Bo McCoy: That's kind of… that's… if… if I bring it all to this day, that's where I'm at today. I'm trying to show… take the light, the, you know, the light, and cast it on people's identity so that they can make that same… hopefully that same change that I did.

116

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I think that kind of circles us around to your framework, which is identity, action, purpose, repeat. How can somebody begin applying that today, even if they have no idea what their purpose is? Even though you're really clearly showing them how they can find their purpose?

117

::

Bo McCoy: Absolutely. I've given away 99% of everything I've ever done. The truth is, that's how you know it's real, that's how you know it's heartfelt, because I'm… I've given away books, I've given away this, so I'm giving this away.

118

::

Bo McCoy: I'm giving you… giving away the core construct of what it takes to become the full version of you. First of all, one.

119

::

Bo McCoy: Identify yourself. Know who, what your core values are. You have to know that. You have to stop and recognize and take a brief moment, and you should do it every day, and there's a reason I'll explain in a minute.

120

::

Bo McCoy: If you do it every day, let me just go ahead and show you. Identify first.

121

::

Bo McCoy: Then, you name it. Like, for example, today, I'm a person who is… I'm the type of person who is committed to sharing

122

::

Bo McCoy: the information that I received from that moment of clarity, and that moment of clarity still resonates to me like a gong. It still reverberates today for me, so I share that from that point.

123

::

Bo McCoy: And so everything I do is in connection to that event two years ago. That's an alignment, okay? Oh, that's what alignment is. Yes, that's alignment. It's when your core values and what you actually do are in line. So, identify, name it.

124

::

Bo McCoy: then align your actions with it. They can be simple, they don't have to be big. One of them… one of them could be, like, today I'm gonna spend one minute

125

::

Bo McCoy: on my identity. That's okay. Do that.

126

::

Bo McCoy: spend one minute going, you know, alright, here's what I think I am. You know, identify… spend that one minute, then tomorrow, spend another minute, and then the next day, and the next day, that compounded version of that action with your identity statement plus the compounded micro little actions later, they come… they squish together to become

127

::

Bo McCoy: a very powerful, neuro, I guess you could call it a neuroscience

128

::

Bo McCoy: shift in your mind. Your brain literally shifts up and goes up one more level. Every time… every time you show your mind that I can set a little goal and make it, I can set a little goal and make it, your mind starts, huh.

129

::

Bo McCoy: I'm starting to have some confidence in this guy. He's… he's getting there. I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm not scared.

130

::

Bo McCoy: then something happens. Usually, almost always, something happens. I call it a drift plan. You have to be ready for the bad days.

131

::

Bo McCoy: Now…

132

::

Bo McCoy: I'm gonna confide something in here. No one knows this but me and my family. Today's a kind of a rough day for us. We had to make a decision.

133

::

Bo McCoy: for us and our family. We made a decision that we were going to shift

134

::

Bo McCoy: our focus towards retirement, and not, on keeping the big house. We want to microsize, we want to downsize. So we're getting rid of one of our cars today, and we're going to be putting up our house. So these are shifts that could cause the average person to go.

135

::

Bo McCoy: Who worries me, I'm not done! And honestly, there's a part of me that's exactly like that. The part of me that's human goes, oh my god!

136

::

Bo McCoy: Are you kidding me? Yeah.

137

::

Bo McCoy: But…

138

::

Bo McCoy: By being honest with you today, and telling you that days come when you need to hold onto something, my drift plan is always this. It's almost always the same.

139

::

Bo McCoy: Stop.

140

::

Bo McCoy: what I'm doing, pay attention to my surroundings, accept the fact that I am doing… I'm aligned with my purpose and my actions, and accept that even though this decision causes

141

::

Bo McCoy: incredibly uncomfortable moments, and incredibly uncomfortable days ahead of us. The purpose behind the action is we want to downsize.

142

::

Bo McCoy: So, I just made it real honest and real for you. We're going through that downsizing in reality. Our ecosystem is changing, but we chose it because we want to have a little bit more freedom.

143

::

Bo McCoy: So to stay in a bigger house and have all these extra cars meant that we had less freedom. So now, to do those things, we have freedom, which means then we can focus on living our lives. Now, it's a small thing, but if you apply the same principles.

144

::

Bo McCoy: to your life, no matter what they are. They absolutely work. So we'll recap, because I talk fast, and as I might… you can tell my teacher mode kicks in.

145

::

Bo McCoy: First thing first, identify.

146

::

Bo McCoy: Okay? Name it.

147

::

Bo McCoy: Create your, your micro-actions that you can, you can stack day-to-day, and then…

148

::

Bo McCoy: Reflect a little bit, check on yourself.

149

::

Bo McCoy: every day, and you just kind of check in, say, did I do it yesterday? Yeah, I did, good. That check-in builds confidence, self-esteem, it kind of just…

150

::

Bo McCoy: builds you up, your brain starts keeping score, okay? So, if you do smaller things over a long period of time, amazing things happen. Now, I hope you get a cheat day like I did, and have an identity epiphany, and your life changes nearly overnight.

151

::

Bo McCoy: But, if that doesn't happen, you can do these little micro things, and I promise, they get better. It does get better.

152

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: My personal experience is that it does actually happen to a large number of people.

153

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Did you start… Questioning your purpose, and… and who you are.

154

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: From a personal standpoint, you do get epiphanies, or downloads, or…

155

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I choose to believe that there are spirit beings around us that communicate with us, whether you call them angels, or God, or whatever you want to call them. They are alien by nature. By definition, they are not.

156

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: humans, so they are aliens. They come to us and talk to us, and if we're quiet, you know.

157

::

Bo McCoy: Elijah.

158

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: had the still, small voice, it wasn't in the big things. It was when he got quiet that he got his answer. And if we can slow down, and just, like, it doesn't take a long… you don't have to do it

159

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: like, every day and meditate for 5 hours and be super spiritual. It has… it really, to me, doesn't have anything to do with spirituality. It's just paying attention to

160

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Who… who you are, being quiet enough to let everything else fall away so that you can hear yourself.

161

::

Bo McCoy: The mysteries and wisdom of the universe are represented in every cell that we have.

162

::

Bo McCoy: The reason why I know that to be a fact

163

::

Bo McCoy: And I'll back this up in two or three different ways. One way, if you want to go Bible way, I can do that. We were created out of the dust of the earth, and God created us in His image. Therefore, the same dust that created the heavens and the earth created us, which means we are connected

164

::

Bo McCoy: At a biological level to the entire universe.

165

::

Bo McCoy: So, when you're tapping on your… when you're, like, trying to chisel away those hard spots of your life.

166

::

Bo McCoy: you're saying I'm going deeper, deeper, deeper. I want to go back to the root, back to the creation of it, back to where I was supposed to look like, the way I was supposed to move and feel. I'm going back to that. I've got 50 years laying on top of it, but I'm going back to it, because that's where the power is, right? So that's answer number one. So that's… that's the Bible route. Now you can look at it from a… from a, I guess you could say, a universal route.

167

::

Bo McCoy: There's a such thing as what I have read about it. I don't know if a lot of people agree with it, but I will mention it. There's a thing called the Akashic Record, which basically allows everything in the universe to record everything. And if… and if you believe in that, it means you can tap into it occasionally, and or live as much as you can in it, and pull

168

::

Bo McCoy: pull down data, because everything that is and was and will be is still connected in there. So that's two different ways we can look at it. And then there's just the human way.

169

::

Bo McCoy: just being biological. A biological human?

170

::

Bo McCoy: that is learning to be a biological human has steps and progressions, and that's… if you want to use evolution? Fine, let's use evolution. We evolved to learn how to think.

171

::

Bo McCoy: There you go. So we can evolve to learn how to have a proper identity and a proper view of who we are. I just gave you 3 ways to answer that exact same question, and all of them are true.

172

::

Bo McCoy: Depending on who you are.

173

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: We're biological beings, so we're receivers.

174

::

Bo McCoy: Absolutely, we have a frequency, and we also have a frequency. Now, and that's a proven fact, that we emanate a frequency.

175

::

Bo McCoy: are… it's kind of like an IP address, if you will. It's like a www for Jill. www.jill. Okay, that's… okay, now we can look at what's going on in the programming of Jill. So if you go back that far, you can do that as well. So there's… there's a fourth way to look at it. Frequency.

176

::

Bo McCoy: I mean, I love what Tesla said. He goes, everything is frequency. Okay. Well, if that means everything is frequency, so let's talk about what happened to Bo that day on the side of the bed.

177

::

Bo McCoy: Bo got up, Bad day, didn't sleep well.

178

::

Bo McCoy: Pain in his knees, felt horrible. I was 115 pounds heavier. I was miserable. I thought my life was quickly gonna be over, to be frank, to be honest. My frequency…

179

::

Bo McCoy: was diminished.

180

::

Bo McCoy: But… The question and the answer broke open, the receiver.

181

::

Bo McCoy: And all of a sudden, my receiver was receiving frequency.

182

::

Bo McCoy: And once you got frequency coming in, my God, that's when you're powerful, again. So there's yet that fourth way we can look at it. So…

183

::

Bo McCoy: If you're listening to this podcast, and you're, you know, if you're a Christian, we haven't tried to offend. If you're, you know, a creation… if you're a Darwinism, we haven't tried to offend.

184

::

Bo McCoy: If you're a frequency person, we haven't tried to offend. If you're just a human being walking the planet, we haven't tried to offend. What we've done is show you that everything we're talking about here today

185

::

Bo McCoy: is available to you.

186

::

Bo McCoy: Pick your lane! Pick your choice! Choose your path! You know? Oh, God, I just remember. Oh, so funny. Do you remember, Ghostbusters when they had to choose the form of the Destructor, and it became the, you know, the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man? He comes walking out. Well, you know, choose the form of your revelation, of your restoration here.

187

::

Bo McCoy: Choose the form, but choose it! That's the point.

188

::

Bo McCoy: Make your choice, because I've… I personally believe, of course, and this is me talking, not anybody else.

189

::

Bo McCoy: If you make your choice, and let's say you're more into, you know, Darwinism, or whatever, and I believe the closer you get to your true identity, you're gonna start to go, maybe there is something to this about this universal intelligence.

190

::

Bo McCoy: And the closer you get to that, you go, well, maybe there is something about this God thing. You know, maybe there is something about this. It's because the closer you get to your true identity, the more inclusive and the more honest you really are. And so, you stop shutting out truth, and you start opening up to it. And that's what this is all about.

191

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And you said something earlier about identifying your values, your core values.

192

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I think once you identify your core values and you start living your life

193

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: With those as your filter, your life also changes dramatically.

194

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And just reminding yourself each day, these are my core values.

195

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: And when you get hit with things, how does this…

196

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: how does this resonate with my core values, and does it fit in my life? And it allows you to make choices that are based on things that are going to make you feel in alignment with yourself, rather than, oh, I have to do this because somebody's going to be mad at me.

197

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: it helps you set up boundaries, and I think boundaries are for ourselves. When I first learned about boundaries, I thought it was for other people. I'm gonna put up fences and protect myself! And then I realized, oh no, honey, those are for you.

198

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Boundaries are little fences you put inside yourself to keep yourself safe.

199

::

Bo McCoy: Right. And you know…

200

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Tell anybody about them.

201

::

Bo McCoy: Right? One of the things that I've had to unlearn is, from coming from my core values and walking in an identity, a truly aligned identity.

202

::

Bo McCoy: I've had to… I've had to realize that, and this is something I'm admitting.

203

::

Bo McCoy: I started noticing people around me were looking at me a little janky now, like, what's going on with this dude? That's all he talks about anymore. And there's a reason.

204

::

Bo McCoy: The Bible calls it being unequally yoked.

205

::

Bo McCoy: So, in your ecosystem of your life, you've got people that have been there forever, people you love and care for. Well, you've just gone through what I would call a paradigm shift in your life.

206

::

Bo McCoy: and or going through a paradigm shift in your life, everybody around you didn't feel what you felt. They didn't get that enlightenment. They didn't get that download, that repository, they didn't get that.

207

::

Bo McCoy: They didn't get that. You know, none of that happened for them. So when they hear you talking about it 24-7, they're gonna begin to wonder, what's going on with this guy?

208

::

Bo McCoy: And a little bit of it is good, because if maybe they're inquisitive enough to start their own journey, it also begins to rub against people, and there's a reason for that. People who are not aligned tend to be frustrated with people who are.

209

::

Bo McCoy: I'm gonna say that one more time. People who are not aligned tend to be very frustrated with people who are, because what they receive from that is judgment and condemnation.

210

::

Bo McCoy: That's coming from their old scripts. This little finger here, the biographical finger of the handprint of identity, says.

211

::

Bo McCoy: That we were trained in a way in our lives that taught us to respond to certain things in certain ways, and those bad memories, those bad thoughts, they've caked on top of each other for 20, 30, 40 years! So when you see this guy walking around going, identity, identity, identity, right? You go, you're annoying, dude.

212

::

Bo McCoy: You're… you really… it's because your crustied part of you that's still not come off and still holding you back sees that as an indictment.

213

::

Bo McCoy: It's an accusation, even though you said none of those words.

214

::

Bo McCoy: They just feel it. It's because they don't walk in that same light and same presence. They feel convicted. They feel oppressed. And I've had to stop what I was doing a few times and actually talk to the person and say, listen.

215

::

Bo McCoy: I'm just talking about what happened to me. I'm not saying that your walk is exactly like mine.

216

::

Bo McCoy: You… you and I are different humans. We grew up different. Therefore, it's okay for you to have a different feeling than I do, or a different journey than I do. And I've had to learn it. That was a hard one for me, because I thought everybody was supposed to be happy for me, and even the ones who are supposed to be happy for me seem like they're upset with me, which is weird!

217

::

Bo McCoy: That makes no sense!

218

::

Bo McCoy: What do you think about that, just out of curiosity?

219

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I don't think people are meant to be…

220

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I don't think all people are meant to be in our lives.

221

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: For our whole lives.

222

::

Bo McCoy: people…

223

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: in for a reason and a season, a lot of times, and I think that sometimes people come along to teach us things, and then we need to be able to let them go. I say bless and release, but it's really about

224

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Not… not condemning them, not having a thought about who they are, or making up a story about it, just letting it fade.

225

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Or… in some cases, you just have to cut it off entirely, but it's just… It's okay. We don't…

226

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: have to hang on to things just because it was the way it's always been. And I think, you know, you're talking about identity shifting. Identity shifting is… is huge, and I know this is what you help people with who've lost a lot of weight.

227

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Because your identity changes, and when your identity changes, your associations will also change. And it's hard to navigate that one. You're not expecting it. You just commented on, you know, people that should be happy for you aren't.

228

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Because it changes their perspective of how they interact with you, and they're not… they're not prepared for that. They just wanted things to be the same for them, because…

229

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: It… it rocks their world, too. You know, whatever we do also impacts those that we're around, even casually.

230

::

Bo McCoy: I couldn't agree more. That's exactly what I've experienced. And this happens a lot in bariatric surgery. For example, a person that, you know, the divorce rate after bariatric surgery is something… somewhere near 80%. I didn't know if anybody knew that.

231

::

Bo McCoy: But, so if someone has bariatric surgery, if they're not…

232

::

Bo McCoy: I guess, teamed up with someone who's very, very strong and can see what's going on and walk them through it.

233

::

Bo McCoy: And if that marriage had any cracks, crevices, or issues, I promise you, bariatric surgery and losing a lot of weight will find every single one of them. What ends up happening is, is because if that person who lost the weight immediately becomes, 100 pounds less, or 150 pounds less, they begin to walk in a different light of who they are. They're not going to take crap anymore.

234

::

Bo McCoy: Because now they feel like they don't have to. Well, they didn't have to back then, they just didn't know it. And so, what happens is, is they were accepting of crap in the past. Junk.

235

::

Bo McCoy: you know, bad treatment, being snickered at, or whatever. They accepted it in the past because

236

::

Bo McCoy: they were relevant into it, they were still overweight. But as they lose weight, they get empowered to look at circumstances and situations and go, no, I'm not going to accept that anymore. I'm not going to accept that anymore, I'm not going to accept that anymore. What's happened is that's an identity shift. Now, they don't say that.

237

::

Bo McCoy: Most people don't recognize that, but they've evolved their identity to the point where they are able to stand on their own two feet.

238

::

Bo McCoy: I had this exact same thing happen to me, and I'm gonna give you a quote that I promise you is the most true thing I've said today.

239

::

Bo McCoy: I lost… I used to weigh 656 pounds, I lost 400 pounds in two… excuse me, yeah, two and a half years, two years. So I went from 656 down to 250 in two years, and I was the most lost human being on the planet.

240

::

Bo McCoy: You wanna know why?

241

::

Bo McCoy: Everything I knew about my identity was tied to 656 and 72-inch ways. I had no clue who I was, I was completely lost, I did not know what to do with my life, and I… because of all of that, I began to do… I want to try that. Oh, let's do that. Oh, let's try this relationship, let's do that. I got a little bit crazy there for a while. I'm not gonna lie. I was single, and I went a little bit nuts.

242

::

Bo McCoy: you know, I… I kind of reverted back to my teenage days, you know, trying to date and see as many people as I could.

243

::

Bo McCoy: I think it's because I thought…

244

::

Bo McCoy: I'm entitled, I don't know. So, I wish, and this is the honest statement I was gonna say, I promised you.

245

::

Bo McCoy: If I could go back in time, And sit down with

246

::

Bo McCoy: the 400-pound guy who was sitting across from me, who had just lost 400 pounds, this is what I'd tell him.

247

::

Bo McCoy: The applause stops.

248

::

Bo McCoy: The weight loss stops.

249

::

Bo McCoy: The accolades stop. The attaboys, attagirls, wow! All of that stops.

250

::

Bo McCoy: If you're feeding on it right now, and you're living on it right now, when it stops, you're gonna go into a tailspin.

251

::

Bo McCoy: And when you go into a tailspin, you're gonna come out on the other side, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and so on, pounds heavier than you are right now. Because what happened is.

252

::

Bo McCoy: When you went through your weight loss shift, your identity doesn't shift automatically.

253

::

Bo McCoy: It has to be retrained and retooled for the new you. And if you haven't done that, I didn't. When I lost 400 pounds, I didn't reset. Over the next 20 years, from 204 to 224, I gained over 200 pounds.

254

::

Bo McCoy: In 2024, I weighed 466, okay? That's heavy, that's hurtful, that was causing me all of the pain that we talked about earlier. When I… when I had my epiphany that day, then it said to me, you're a new person.

255

::

Bo McCoy: Ever since that moment, I've started losing weight.

256

::

Bo McCoy: You want to know why? I reset my identity to align with who I really was. Now, it took me a year to lose 30 pounds, and another year to lose 30… another 30, but this year, I started taking the GLP-1s.

257

::

Bo McCoy: it was like throwing gas on the fire, and now I'm losing weight so fast, I can barely keep my branches up. I was walking outside just the other day, pants on the ground, on the ground, because I… I know, right? And I was laughing at myself, trying to grab my head, stuff in my hands. I had to drop what I had in my hands, because I'm…

258

::

Bo McCoy: Just in my yard, with my pants down. And guess what?

259

::

Bo McCoy: It's because… Life went into fast-forward.

260

::

Bo McCoy: And my identity has gone into Fast Forward, so now.

261

::

Bo McCoy: GLP-1, my identity coaching, all of the things I've learned over the last couple years, all of the books, all of the deposits in my life, I'm now… I'm able, I'm 100% able to lose all of this weight, and I'm now down, total, since 2024, 115 pounds.

262

::

Bo McCoy: since the Epiphany Day. So, there's a movie out right now called Disclosure Day. It's about aliens being, you know, introduced to the world. Well, call two years ago my disclosure day. It's when I disclosed to the world, this is who I really am, and everything's gonna change after that.

263

::

Bo McCoy: Now, my family, my friends, and everybody around me is, you know, they're going, yeah, Bo, you know, I was losing weight. Nobody says, you know, it's really cool about your identity thing that you're doing. They'll say, hey, Bo, what's really cool about your weight?

264

::

Bo McCoy: And because you're losing weight again, and hey, man, you look great!

265

::

Bo McCoy: But no one wants to talk about that identity thing. You wanna know why? Because they don't understand the power of it. Even though I'm this resource sitting right beside and willing, they completely let it go right by them. But they still give me those accolades, but I'm not living on them. You wanna know why? I learned my lesson.

266

::

Bo McCoy: Remember that 400-pound loss?

267

::

Bo McCoy: I didn't lose… I didn't win that last… I didn't win that battle. I lost that battle, and I had a whole bunch more for 20 years. I'm winning now.

268

::

Bo McCoy: absolutely winning, because now I don't survive on accolades, and thanks, and attaboys, and whew! You know, I don't… that's not me anymore. You know what gets me going now? Is being able to impart identity to some one person, and explain to them, and have their eyes go.

269

::

Bo McCoy: and open up for the first time, and it's like watching a birth. And that's why I call it every day, we begin again.

270

::

Bo McCoy: That's the principle behind Begin Purpose, is we begin again every single day.

271

::

Bo McCoy: Does that mean I gotta create my identity all over? No! Everything behind you is amazing! Hold on to the good, spit out the bones, and let's keep moving, because I now live in three dimensions, the past, the present, and the future. And what I do is I take the good stuff from the past, and all of the education, all of the things I did, all of the lessons I learned, and I bring them to the present, and I hold onto them, and I say, okay, this is now the core identity that's around all of that good stuff.

272

::

Bo McCoy: And now, let's look to the future, because I'm creating a new dude over here. And so I take this little lump of clay, and I start molding him and go, yeah, that's what he's gonna look like right there. And the more times I do that, the more times I touch that clay, the softer it gets, it gets warm to the touch, you start to feel it. That's your identity. Do it every single day?

273

::

Bo McCoy: Make this statement, create the… create the little, action points, create your anchors, create your drift plan, and as you go through that little… it could take 5 to 10 minutes tops!

274

::

Bo McCoy: And then you get to look into the future and go, I see you.

275

::

Bo McCoy: I love that! I love that, because every day, I get to look in the future. Can I tell you what one of mine is?

276

::

Bo McCoy: I've never told anybody this. I haven't even told my wife this. This is embarrassing.

277

::

Bo McCoy: I have a silent dream.

278

::

Bo McCoy: That I haven't ever told anybody.

279

::

Bo McCoy: A long time ago.

280

::

Bo McCoy: I heard a voice in my head say.

281

::

Bo McCoy: 5 pounds to 500 pounds, you'll be my witness.

282

::

Bo McCoy: I didn't understand it then. Not quite.

283

::

Bo McCoy: I kinda thought I knew?

284

::

Bo McCoy: But my silent little desire is, is I would like

285

::

Bo McCoy: give a TEDx talk someday on this topic.

286

::

Bo McCoy: On living life.

287

::

Bo McCoy: before, during, and after, and how to capitalize on the future by living today in true identity. It's kind of a… it's kind of a little silent thing in the back.

288

::

Bo McCoy: Hopefully, we'll see.

289

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: I see it for you. I see it for you.

290

::

Bo McCoy: No, thank you! It's back there.

291

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: connections, you know?

292

::

Bo McCoy: It's hidden, it's hidden, and I don't talk about it because it's a little embarrassing to go, well, but what is a TEDx talk? Well, okay, it doesn't have to be TEDx. It could be, just give me enough audience so that I can get the message out.

293

::

Bo McCoy: It's the message that's important, not the bow. And honestly, I'm just… I'm just the vessel at this point, because everything that I share was pretty much just given to me.

294

::

Bo McCoy: all of this knowledge of identity, and there's one more thing, and I'm… I like sheer, I don't know why, you're pulling all this out.

295

::

Bo McCoy: And you're not saying a thing! That's the funny part!

296

::

Bo McCoy: I… I believe this is calling that I'm working on right now. I believe I was called to be

297

::

Bo McCoy: and an identity mentor. I believe that this is a calling, and I believe that for years, I ran away from it, and I believed I didn't think I was qualified or was capable. But you know, something amazing, I had this happen to me.

298

::

Bo McCoy: I realized about, you know, people being, you know, qualified and capable.

299

::

Bo McCoy: You know, if God gives it to you, you're qualified.

300

::

Bo McCoy: And if you put it into practice, you're capable.

301

::

Bo McCoy: So, qualified and capable?

302

::

Bo McCoy: that's where I am, and I really believe that this calling that I have

303

::

Bo McCoy: needs to get out there. So it's not just about one-on-one coaching, or having a website, or writing books. To me, it's more about getting the message out. This message is way more important than a one-on-one. Way more important than selling a book. So, I appreciate this opportunity. This is amazing.

304

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Well, let's tell people how they can learn more about you and the resource that you give away for free.

305

::

Bo McCoy: Sure, well, I'll give you two websites, and they're important, because both… they both do two separate things. One is, Begin Purpose.

306

::

Bo McCoy: Begin purpose is, I would call that our flagship, or excuse me, my flagship is, the purpose is for identity.

307

::

Bo McCoy: you go through it, it's free to register. The first 8 modules are just about identity. Now, there's a bunch of free stuff in there. I mean, a bunch. Almost every page has something you can get for free. But if you want the handprint of identity, the book you referenced, go to Tools.

308

::

Bo McCoy: and scroll all the way down to the bottom, and it says Handprint of Identity, I think it says Course, and you click on that, and when you get to that page, it's gonna ask for your email address. You drop your email address, it's gonna send you that right away for free. So, say it again, begin purpose.

309

::

Bo McCoy: Tools drop-down, scroll down, handprint of identity, free book. See? Pretty simple.

310

::

Bo McCoy: Also, if you're listening and you're struggling in weight, you're… you're like, okay, Bo, you got my attention about this whole body identity thing. And I created a… this is a book that we didn't mention, it's called Body… it's called Body Mass Identity.

311

::

Bo McCoy: And the reason why body mass… I apologize for this little strip right here, this is my author copy. And the reason… I'm not promoting the book, I'm promoting the idea behind it, is when you go to the website, what you're gonna find is that

312

::

Bo McCoy: because of my understanding of identity and body mass and having lost weight, 12 years ago, I wrote my dissertation on this topic, Body Mass identity. And when I wrote the… when I wrote my dissertation, the dissertation's purpose was to try to

313

::

Bo McCoy: circumvent looking at our lives just through BMI. And so instead of BMI, we want to look at the quality of our lives. And so, through Body Mass Identity, I explain and train you how you can look at your life

314

::

Bo McCoy: in a new way that is not connected to the scale, okay? You can be 300 pounds and still walk in true identity.

315

::

Bo McCoy: Can I say that one more time? You can be 300 pounds and still walk in true identity. You can be 500 pounds and still walk in true identity.

316

::

Bo McCoy: But once you start walking into your identity, you start

317

::

Bo McCoy: receiving that action from it, you start to actually lose weight, because then the level of care and compassion for yourself kicks into high gear. So once you know who you are through Body Mass Identity, you can then make those changes. That website is exactly the name of the book, Body Mass Identity.

318

::

Bo McCoy: There's a free assessment there. It doesn't cost anything. 90% of what… probably 99% of what I do is for free. So go to that website, take that assessment, and when you take that assessment, it's going to spit out a whole thing for you to tell you who you are, where you are.

319

::

Bo McCoy: And what it's going to do… don't just look at… it's gonna give you a number, because that's a classification number.

320

::

Bo McCoy: It helps us understand where you are in the flow of your identity. That is not a BMI, that just tells us where to start with it. If you have that in your hand, a PDF, and you wanted to get in touch with me, you can get in touch with me through Body Mass Identity, or I can give you a really simple way. You can email me.

321

::

Bo McCoy: Bo McCoy, B-O-M-C-C-O-Y, at gmail.com. So if you want to get in touch with me about identity, body mass identity, or if you just want to tell me your story, I love good stories.

322

::

Bo McCoy: Send me your story. It might be… I might even use it in one of my podcasts. I would love to have a story from people out there who are going through the same thing, and I'd love to… I'd love them to share that with me. That's pretty much it. I mean, I want to make it easy, but then again, you've done such a tremendous job, and thank you for having me on.

Bo McCoy: You don't know it, but I have been silently stalking your school groups and trying to learn about Substack. You know, I should know more about social media, because I actually have a… I actually have an MBA in marketing, but it's traditional. It's more like, you know,

324

::

Bo McCoy: billboards and blah blah, you know? So, learning social media has been a bear for me, and you've helped me a lot. As a matter of fact, 99% of what's on my substack is there because I have took your little course that said, hey, the basics, you gotta do this, this, this, this. So, thank you, Jill, so much for all of your help. You're amazing. This podcast is so much fun, and I have actually learned a lot from some of your other

325

::

Bo McCoy: Yeah, so it's really good. Thank you.

326

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Well, thank you so much for joining us and sharing your story, and sharing what you're doing in the world. It's really important that this message gets out, and that people are able to embrace who they are.

327

::

Bo McCoy: I agree. And if they take nothing, if they don't do anything else other than this.

328

::

Bo McCoy: Just look at yourself, and ask yourself, you know, the question, who are you today?

329

::

Bo McCoy: And what can you do today to… to put that into practice? And what are you thankful for? What are your little baby things you're thankful for? I'll tell you what I'm thankful for. I'm thankful for coffee, man. I'm thankful for my dog. I'm thankful… I'm thankful that I can move around. The other day, I bent over to pick something up, and I… and I… I… I thought.

330

::

Bo McCoy: I threw it back down so I could pick it up again. You know why? Because I bent over at the waist, baby, and I picked it up without even thinking about it, and I touched my toes, and I went into the bedroom, and I said… I told my wife, I said, hey babe, look at this! And she goes, she's looking at me, and I go, watch this! And I touched my toes.

331

::

Bo McCoy: And she's like, that's cool! I'm like, ain't it?

332

::

Bo McCoy: I mean, that's, like, the coolest thing ever! And it happened by… completely by accident. So if you're listening, and you know Bo's a crazy nut, and Jill's, you know, the one that… she's the resident expert here on 99% of everything that she does. I don't even know everything she does.

333

::

Bo McCoy: But if you're listening to us today, and you're sitting there, and you're thinking, you know what, between the two of them, they got my attention. You don't need to buy anything from me, but you need to start working on yourself.

334

::

Jill Hart-The Coach's Alchemist: Absolutely.
